Engine specifications and technical data sourced from Fiat Technical Documentation and EU Vehicle Type Approval Database. All specifications are verified against official Fiat service documentation.
The engine code is essential for ordering parts, diagnosing issues, and verifying compatibility. It is not the same as the VIN or chassis number. This guide shows exactly where to find it - by model and engine type - using official Fiat and DVLA sources

A unique identifier stamped on the engine block or cover used for parts and service.

The vehicle identification number that holds encoded vehicle and engine information.

The chassis or frame number used for registration and legal identification.

Locate the engine code on the front of the engine block, near the timing belt cover. It is stamped into the metal or on a label near the cylinder head.

The engine code is located on a label attached to the camshaft cover. Look for "312A2000" or similar TwinAir designation.

Open the hood and look at the left side of the engine (driver's side). The code is on a white label near the fuel injection system. Confirm "199A2000" for diesel models.

The engine code is cast into the engine block near the exhaust manifold, or on a label on the camshaft cover. Look for "350A1000" or "955A1000".
Engine code locations per Fiat TIS Service Information. V5C field definitions from DVLA Guide to Vehicle Registration. VIN structure compliant with EU Regulation (EC) No 715/2007, Article 7.
A technical breakdown of Fiat's core engine systems including MultiAir, MultiJet, FIRE architecture and TwinAir technology with documented reliability impacts. All data sourced from Fiat Technical Documentation, Service Bulletins and EU Regulation (EC) No 715/2007
Fiat's proprietary MultiAir system uses electro-hydraulic variable valve actuation to control intake valve timing and lift without a traditional camshaft, improving efficiency and performance.
An electro-hydraulic unit between the camshaft and valves uses engine oil pressure controlled by a solenoid valve to vary intake valve timing and lift continuously, eliminating the need for a throttle butterfly.

1.4 MultiAir (2009)
First generation electro-hydraulic system
0.9 TwinAir (2010)
Optimized for 2-cylinder application
1.4 Turbo MultiAir (2013)
Enhanced turbocharged variant
MultiAir unit failure
Hydraulic unit can fail at high mileage (100k+ miles)
Oil quality sensitivity
Requires specific oil specification; poor maintenance causes failure
Solenoid valve issues
Electrical faults can cause rough running or limp mode

Authoritative data on Fiat's global engine production, plant operations, and strategic partnerships. All figures sourced from Stellantis Reports, Sustainability Reports, and EU industrial compliance records.
Fiat manufactures engines at multiple facilities worldwide, each specializing in specific families.

Fiat produced 1.35 million vehicles globally in 2023, confirming its position as the top Stellantis brand by volume [[118]]. Note the steady decline in Diesel production due to Euro 6d regulations, while Hybrid integration rises.
Note: Diesel production has declined steadily due to Euro 6d and WLTP regulations (Regulation (EC) No 715/2007). Hybrid and electric integration rising.
Strategic collaboration for diesel engines. 1.3 MultiJet diesel engines power Opel/Vauxhall and Suzuki models across Europe, utilizing Fiat's Termoli-built blocks.

Shift in production reflects EU emissions policy and changing consumer demand.
This aligns with Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/1151 (WLTP/RDE) and EU 2035 ICE phase-out roadmap.

The most common questions about engine codes, what they mean, how to find them and how this database works
A Fiat engine code (e.g., 199A4000, 350A1000) identifies the engine family, displacement, and variant. The code is essential for ordering correct parts. For example, 199A4000 = 1.2 FIRE 8V, 350A1000 = 1.4 FIRE 16V. Source: Fiat TIS Documentation
Yes, but production is declining. The 1.3 MultiJet and 1.6 MultiJet II are still used in Fiat Panda, Tipo, and 500X (2024 UK models). However, Fiat plans to phase out diesel by 2030 in line with EU emissions targets. Source: Regulation (EC) No 715/2007
The 1.2 FIRE (199A4000) is widely regarded as Fiat's most reliable engine. It's simple, durable, and can exceed 150,000 miles with proper maintenance. The 1.3 MultiJet diesel is also very reliable if serviced regularly.
FIRE engines (1.2, 1.4) use timing belts requiring replacement every 60,000 miles or 5 years. MultiJet diesel and MultiAir petrol engines use timing chains designed for life, though tensioners can fail on high-mileage 1.3 MultiJet engines.
MultiAir engines are generally reliable but require strict maintenance. The electro-hydraulic unit can fail at 100,000+ miles if oil changes are neglected. Use only specified oil (Selenia K Pure Energy) to prevent costly failures.
On the 1.2 FIRE engine, the code (199A4000) is stamped on the front of the engine block near the timing belt cover. Also check the V5C logbook under 'Engine Number'.
On the UK V5C registration document, look for the 'Engine Number' field (not VIN). This matches the engine code (e.g., 199A4000). If the engine was replaced, this may not reflect the current unit.
Common issues include DPF clogging (urban driving), EGR valve failure (carbon buildup), and timing chain tensioner wear (100k+ miles). Regular motorway runs help prevent DPF issues. Source: Fiat Service Bulletins
FIRE: Simple, reliable, budget-friendly (1.2L, 1.4L). MultiAir: Advanced variable valve actuation for better performance and efficiency (1.4L MultiAir). MultiAir is more complex and expensive to repair.
Yes. The engine code (e.g., 199A4000, 350A1000) is required for ordering correct parts (ECU, injectors, timing components). Using VIN alone can lead to errors. Always verify with the physical engine code.
Yes. High-performance engines (1.4 MultiAir Turbo, Abarth variants) or engines with known issues (TwinAir) can increase premiums. Insurers use engine type to assess risk. Always declare correct engine code.
The 1.2 FIRE (199A4000) is designed for 150,000–200,000 miles with proper maintenance. Common service items: timing belt (60k miles), coil packs (80k miles), and oil changes (12k miles).
Yes. All modern Fiat engines (FIRE, MultiAir, MultiJet) are interference engines. If the timing belt/chain fails, internal damage is likely. Immediate towing required. Never delay timing belt replacement.
The 1.3 MultiJet diesel has reported timing chain tensioner failures at 100,000+ miles. Symptoms include rattling noise from the engine. Replacement is expensive (£800–£1,200). Regular oil changes help prevent issues.
Yes, but must be declared to DVLA. Changing engine code (e.g., petrol to diesel) may affect MoT, insurance, and emissions compliance. Source: DVLA guidelines
No. Current Fiat mild hybrids (1.0L, 1.2L) use simplified FIRE-based engines without MultiAir. The 500e full EV uses an electric motor only. MultiAir is reserved for conventional petrol models.
The 0.9 TwinAir (312A2000) is mechanically reliable but has drawbacks: noisy, vibration-prone, and real-world fuel economy often worse than advertised. MultiAir unit can fail at high mileage like larger MultiAir engines.
Positions 4–7 of the VIN indicate engine type. Example: ZFA312... → '312' relates to Fiat 500 platform. Use a Fiat-specific VIN decoder for exact engine code. Source: Fiat TIS Doc. A15001
Older FIRE engines (pre-2010) are simpler and easier to maintain. Newer engines (MultiAir, MultiJet II) offer better efficiency and emissions but are more complex and expensive to repair. Trade-off between simplicity and technology.
